The gradual weakening of the bones, known as osteoporosis, is caused by the effects of aging, disease and certain medications. Many of those with osteoporosis do not know that their bones are thinning at an alarming rate.
By the time the effects are noticed, it is usually due to a broken bone from a seemingly insignificant fall. This disease, however, is treatable, and often even reversible if diagnosed early on. One means of diagnosis is through the use of bone density scans.
