The stand-alone Antibiotic Assistant is designed to meet the
workflow needs of busy clinicians who have adapted handheld
technology to their daily life.
In a stand-alone mode, the TheraDoc Antibiotic Assistant
can provide patient-specific and disease-specific anti-microbial
recommendations with a minimal amount of user input. The
stand-alone Antibiotic Assistant is an ideal clinical decision
support tool for physicians in private practice or those
without access to a hospital information system.
Unlike some quasi decision-support tools available on PDAs,
the TheraDoc Antibiotic Assistant is much more than digitized
reference material. The TheraDoc Antibiotic Assistant provides
a first line recommendation and alternative recommendations
that take into consideration the patients sex, age,
height, weight and renal function. Allergies and mitigating
conditions (e.g. pregnancy, nursing mother) are considered
when appropriate. All recommendations are dose adjusted
for the patient with the proper duration of care indicated,
as well as any relevant caveats. Average wholesale pricing
(AWP) of the recommended drugs is displayed as well as a
monograph for recommended drug(s).
The stand-alone PDA version of the Antibiotic Assistant
is the technology platform for several studies sponsored
by CMS (formerly, HCFA) and the CDC to provide assistance
in infection control practices and antibiotic-decision making
to rural health care providers.
